On this episode of Railfanning NC, you’ll see all sorts of neat stuff as summer slowly begins in the piedmont area. We have 2 appearances of Amtrak P42DC, Dash 8 Phase 3 “Pepsi Can” heritage unit No. 160, leading the Carolinian 80, Operation Lifesaver P42DC No. 203 on Carolinian 79, NYC private business car on Crescent 20, Southern E8 No. 6900 doing a test run at NCTM with an all stainless consist, Amtrak P40DC No. 817 leading 20 with a charger trailing behind (which was also one of the first days with a dining car back in the crescent consist), NS 1065 (Savannah and Atlanta Heritage unit) trailing on NS 165, and last but definitely not least is Amtrak Phase 7 P42DC No. 82...

Watch in 1080p60 This is the compilation of railfanning for winter 2024. Special things to note are Amtrak 161 in the phase 1 paint scheme, P40DC 830 making a very rare run (the unit very rarely leaves the Auto Train) on the Carolinian 79 and 80, my first catch of double chargers on 20, and a P42 trailing on the Piedmont (filling in for a power shortage after a wreck in Durham the week prior). ...

Watch in 1080p60 During the month of October 2023, N&W GP9 No. 620 was pulled out to pull the regular museum passenger train on weekends. Thanks to a wonderful group of engineers, we had the locomotive facing long hood out on the consist. Due to the rarety of this and the alternation of horns through the weekend, I made sure to get a few shots of the engine on the train. Enjoy!

Watch in 1080p60 On Friday September 15th, the day before TVRM’S return to Summerville, GP38 high hood Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia No. 80 was hauling the missionary ridge local. I took a ride behind it as well as caught it at a few spots trackside throughout the day. Enjoy!

That’s a Virginia & Southwestern 3 chime. It’s essentially a modified Ps-4 whistle on a different bowl and valve assembly.

Awesome video, my friend! What determines if they bring out any of these other engines (not counting the 611 I know she isn't native to the NCTM) for use? Like I hadn't ever seen ACL 501 running before OR 6900 for that matter (heard it has a pretty bad leak that hadn't been fixed yet?). Are there any steam engines currently at the museum that COULD be in running condition and is it just cost prohibitive to run it/them if so? I was told there is one currently under or partially being worked on I think? I want to volunteer so badly, though I would suck at any dealing with people stuff, but man I want to learn all about everything else lol. Heck, I just wanna sit and chat with people there about it all, but honestly feel like I'll be a bother. It's just all so fascinating! Is that a random Amtrak goin by in the background at 26:45? Cool catch in the vid either way!

One time when I was at the NC transportation museum, I was on one of their trains and saw 611’s tender. Later when I was in the repair shop portion that’s when I saw her. I think she was having her firebox replaced or somthing like that
Seeing the E3 run whenever it runs is always a treat, especially because it’s the last of its kind (even though it was rebuilt as an E6).
what whistle does #12 have and #190?

@@SteamZRailfan very nice; former FWWR #2248 used to have a crosby 3 chime as well as a SP 6 chime and a step top 5 chime whistle before scrapped in the yard in 2018

@@SteamZRailfan is it difficult adding them because the ones that come with them are not very great
It's a shame that this steam locomotive can't get on a mainline, and do 55 plus miles per hour, like it did in It's heyday.
Well 4501 maxes out around 60, so that’s largely impractical for it to run that fast. Another concern would be getting approval from Amtrak and the FRA. NS management decisions and government bureaucracy would spell an end to that within the first year.

36 cars with 2 engines, then you go to other places witb a push pull and only 2 coaches!
It really is something isn’t it. I’ve seen videos of this train with 53 cars and still only 2 engines.

Not a Ps4 whistle. While similar, this whistle is a Virginia & Southwestern Railway 3 chime. I was also the fireman on this trip.
